Private Commissions

As well as commercial work, I take on projects from private clients. This can take the form of hand-lettered prints for gifts, calligraphy for big events (i.e. weddings, dinners, etc) or chalk signs for parties. Basically if you need something written nicely, I'm here for you! I also have a certain amount of availability for on-site sign writing. This is generally limited to the London (UK) area, but please ask and we'll see if we can work something out! For event-specific work, please refer to my events page.

What my clients are saying...

From start to finish, Julia was an absolute pleasure. She was extremely responsive, laid out all options upfront - but also provided helpful guidance based on her experience - and went above and beyond to ensure I was happy with the final piece. I recommended to her a friend before I’d even received her work! 100% pleased- the print she made is stunning.

Julia is amazing. She created lots of different calligraphy elements for my wedding making everything look harmonious and beautiful. She was involved throughout the planning- from the invitations at the start, to the parts on the actual day, creating everything from the handwritten place cards to the table plan and welcome sign. Everything was wonderful and was one less thing to worry about once she was involved. She was speedy and efficient, and nothing was too much trouble. I would very much recommend her to anyone who wants a personal touch to their wedding or any project. It made our perfect day all the more perfect! Thank you Julia!
— Laura Gardner | Wedding client
Such an easy but thorough process from first contact to delivery. Julia has been so helpful, responded quickly and even helped me with her suggestions in an area that isn’t my expertise! Delighted with the end product and will certainly be back for me, it’s the perfect gift idea!

The Commissioning Process

Understandably, the first question people have when commissioning private work is "How much?" Before I can give you a detailed quote, I'll need some information from you. Please send an email to with the following:

What is it?

Are you looking for a brush lettered print? Calligraphy to use on an invitation? A chalk sign to welcome guests to your wedding?

What will it say?

A list of first names? First & Surnames? A 10 line poem? Please include information about numbers as well (e.g. 50 first names)

How big is it?

An A4 print? An A1 chalkboard? Calligraphy for an A6 invitation?

Digital File or Printed?

What file format do you require? If it's printed, what kind of paper stock would you like? If you're not sure, don't panic! I can advise you depending on your needs.

When do you need it for?

Please leave at least 6 WEEKS until you need the commission. If your commission is for a wedding, please leave a few months - as much time as possible is always best. If you need something sooner, please ask and I'll do my best to see what I can arrange but I can't guarantee a place in my calendar. A rush fee may also be applied on top of the quote if things are to be turned around quickly. PLEASE NOTE: Timescales will depend on the type of commission and will vary. If I am sending you a physical item, please also include where I will be sending it to as postage costs will need to be factored into your quote.

General information:

  • If you want the original hand-lettered piece of work, it will cost a lot more than lettering that has been turned into a digital file and printed (only applicable to prints, invitations, etc. Chalk signs, name cards and the like are, of course, original pieces).

  • Generally 3 rounds of revisions are included in the quote (any more revisions required will be charged additionally). If you are on a tight budget we can lower the amount of revisions included to decrease the price a bit.

  • Once the quote and timeline have been agreed, a non-refundable deposit of 50% is required to secure your place in my calendar if your project is worth over £75.00. For projects under this amount, the full balance is required up front. Work will commence once this has been received.

  • When the commission has been completed, you will be sent a low-res digital proof (or photos in the case of physical items) to approve. This is where amends, if any, come in. Once you are happy I will have the piece(s) printed if applicable. At this point I will ask for the rest of the payment, if applicable, and when that is received I will send your commission on it's merry way to you!

Phew - well done for making it this far! I appreciate that this is a lot of information but I like to keep my clients as "in the loop" as possible so that we can work as a team. I look forward to hearing from you!
